His yoga center in San Francisco (1995 – 2005) allowed him to develop his own styles of yoga (SomaYoga), bodywork (SomaBodywork) and self-bodywork (Targeted Self Massage). His techniques are based on yoga asana (postures), pranayama (breathing) and bandhas (energy locks). They are all built on the foundation of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and bodywork. His classes stress proper alignment, proper breathing, energy building and energy circulation. He offers the SomaYoga Teacher Training Course, SomaBodywork Training Course and yoga vacations at tropical retreat centers throughout the world.

James has fused contemporary knowledge of: anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics and bodywork with the ancient health sciences of meditation, energy work and hatha yoga to create a vibrant contemporary healing system that is based in 5,000 years of research and development. His style is also tailored to the needs of today's hectic lifestyle.

His clients include: professional athletes, musicians, dancers, business executives and everyday people.
