James Burkhardt has practiced yoga for over 35 years. He has taught yoga for more
than 25 years and he has taught meditation for over 15 years. He studied yoga throughout
his life with some of the most recognized yoga teachers around the globe. He has
also taught anatomy in various settings and for well respected yoga courses. James
holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Dance from the University of Colorado and he
danced in New York City for 10 years. He has a background in sports, martial arts,
meditation and multiple styles of Eastern and Western bodywork / massage (St. John's
Neuromuscular Pain Relief Certification, Rolf Institute, Ohashi Shiatsu Center).
His yoga center in San Francisco (1995 – 2005) allowed him to develop his own styles
of yoga (SomaYoga), bodywork (SomaBodywork) and self-bodywork (Targeted Self Massage).
His techniques are based on yoga asana (postures), pranayama (breathing) and bandhas
(energy locks). They are all built on the foundation of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics
and bodywork. His classes stress proper alignment, proper breathing, energy building
and energy circulation. He offers the SomaYoga Teacher Training Course, SomaBodywork
Training Course and yoga vacations at tropical retreat centers throughout the world.
James has fused contemporary knowledge of: anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics
and bodywork with the ancient health sciences of meditation, energy work and hatha
yoga to create a vibrant contemporary healing system that is based in 5,000 years
of research and development. His style is also tailored to the needs of today's
hectic lifestyle.
His clients include: professional athletes, musicians, dancers, business executives
and everyday people.
