SomaBreathing is a system of breathing and movement techniques developed by James
Burkhardt that is based on yogic pranayama, chi kung and the five-element system.
It is a stand-alone practice that builds energy, circulates energy and balances
the emotions. It is also a great way to start or end the day or it can be used as
a preparation for skill sports, yoga or meditation.
Pranayama and chi kung are yogic practices for building and circulating the energy
of the breath (prana or chi) through the energy system.
The five-element system is a traditional Taoist way of looking at the individual’s
relationship to all aspects of Life. It describes the relationship the individual’s
microcosm to the macrocosm of life. More specifically it shows how the five elements
of life (fire, water, earth, metal and wood) relate to the meridians of the individual’s
energy system. It provides a map for harmonizing the microcosm and the macrocosm.
The SomaBreathing exercises clear blocked energy in the meridians making one feel
quiet, strong and balanced as energy is fed to all aspects of one’s being. The most
immediate effect is usually a quieting of the mind and a balancing of the emotions.
