ABOUT SOMAYOGA

glossary

SomaYoga is a comprehensive yoga system created by James Burkhardt. It is a fluid form with set sequences that can be repeated (therapeutic repetition is called abhyasa). Yet the system it is malleable and easily modifiable for the various levels and specials conditions of each student. No two students are alike, so it is limiting to create a one size fits all technique.

It is important to have a repeatable system so students can: increase strength and flexibility while learning the postures and routines. Repetition increases muscle memory and physical intelligence, making the student more independent. SomaYoga classes are never exactly the same though. Once the student learns the routine, robotic repetition tends to turn off the mind and that is opposed to one of yoga’s main tenants, mindfulness. By changing the class slightly each day, students must engage and this connects the body and mind. This makes body and mind stronger, more supple, creative and able to respond spontaneously in class or life.

James developed the SomaYoga System after years of studying many styles of yoga, meditation, bodywork, martial arts and many other healing arts. It builds energy, works the entire body and balances all aspects of the being; body, mind and emotions.

James has been practicing yoga and studying health for over 35 years. He has been teaching for over 25 years. His SomaYoga System is a flow style that focuses on: core strengthening, asana (yoga postures), pranayama (breath work), bandhas (energy locks), proper biomechanical alignment, mental and emotional alignment, energy building and energy circulation.

James has also developed unique techniques for hip opening, shoulder opening and targeted soft tissue release that can speed the body's progress in yoga or sports. It is also helpful in prevention and rehabilitation from injury as well as relieving the stresses of daily life.

In ancient India, Soma was an herbal drink used in spiritual ceremonies for elevating consciousness. It translates as "Food Of The Gods". In Greek it means, "of the whole body or cells of the body", implying wholeness. Somatic sensing is the practice of bringing consciousness to all the senses (or every cell in the body) at once to experience (or "be in") the moment. It is also the acronym used for the area in San Francisco (South Of MArket) where James opened his first SomaYoga School during the dotcom boom in 1995. It was the perfect birthplace for SomaYoga with so many very creative and overworked people.

James believes in: safety, consistent practice, patience and a holistic approach to life. With consistent practice and patience comes the quickest and safest progress. There is no rush; just practice, patience and purifying sweat.
